Family Counselling

Family counselling is a new service available for families. Whilst our Relationship Counselling focuses on the adult relationship, Family Counselling can involve other members of the family group - including blended or extended families struggling with relationship issues.

Examples of where Family counselling could help:-

  • Parents and children who are struggling to communicate effectively
  • Parents whose different ideas about parenting are causing friction
  • Children/young people struggling with sibling relationships
  • Blended families coping with bringing together a 'new' family
  • Family members who are recovering from the influence of abuse which has affected their relationships

Everyone has family arguments, and sometimes these just 'blow over'. Big changes in a family - such as those caused by separation, divorce, remarriage, or bereavement - can cause stress for everyone. Alternatively problems or life changes that one person is experiencing may affect the whole family group. These could include health problems, work stress, 'growing up' etc. Sometimes adult members of a family have unresolved issues from the past which are making it difficult to 'get along'.

Family counsellors are specially trained to work with families to help people resolve their problems. They won't take sides or tell you what to do.

As a first step you should contact us to make a First Appointment with one of our trained Family Counsellors. At this stage you may choose to come on your own, or to bring other members of the family group. For some people one consultation is sufficient to help you resolve you difficulties. Alternatively you may decide, with your counsellor, that further sessions would be helpful. The counsellor might suggest that family members sometimes come alone or in smaller groups or bring other relatives to some sessions. The pattern of sessions will be decided by you and your counsellor and would not normally involve a weekly commitment.
