Children & Young People's Services - Relate 2U
Growing up can be tough in the 21st century. Children can be badly affected by events such as a parent leaving or dying, conflict in the family, bullying, abuse or sexuality issues. When young people are unhappy they may be angry and upset; taking risks and getting involved in crime or abusing drugs and alcohol. Alternatively they may be withdrawn or over-anxious, and may hurt themselves in other ways. Concentration at school often suffers. When things go off track in the teenage years, they can set the pattern for a lifetime. Some professional support before problems become entrenched can make all the difference...
Relate 2U is a confidential counselling service for young people aged 11 – 19 years, drawing on Relate’s long experience of helping people with relationships. Young people who access this service could need help because of:-
- Parents'/carers' separation or divorce, either recently or in the past.
- Ill health or disability of parents or siblings, including the effect of caring responsibilities.
- Difficulty adjusting to living in a new family.
- The affects of violence, abuse or the use of drugs or alcohol in the family.
- Problems with other relationships, such as relationships at school.
Our young people’s counsellors have all received special training to work with young people. They will not judge young people, and will always respect their personal or religious beliefs. They will provide a ‘safe place’ where young people can talk through what is happening confidentially, and be helped to cope with their situation and to build resilience and life skills. The counsellor will help them to work out the best way forward, but will not tell them what to do.
Everything that is said will remain confidential. We won’t be telling anyone outside Relate about anything the young person says to us unless there are exceptional circumstances - such as a risk to their safety, or that of someone else (particularly another child).
Relate2u services are available in some schools, and at Relate Nottinghamshire offices in Nottingham and Mansfield. If Relate2u is not available in your school, then you will need to contact us direct to make a First Appointment with one of our trained Young People Counsellors. If you are under 16 then you should ask a parent, carer or other responsible adult to call on your behalf.
