Divorce Mediation

Divorce Mediation

What is Family Mediation?

What is Mediation?

Mediation is a way to resolve disputes between divorcing people without the need to go to court.

If you're separating, divorcing or dissolving a civil partnership, Family Mediation can help you and your ex-partner make arrangements for your children and finances.

Family Mediation offers a safe, confidential environment for you to make arrangements for the future following the end of a relationship. This could be financial issues or discussions about where and with whom your children may live. The law now says that you must consider whether mediation can help before you can take your case to court.

Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting (MIAM)
The initial meeting with a trained mediator takes via Zoom or Face to Face. Your ex partner will have a separate confidential meeting and nothing discussed by either party is disclosed. They will also discuss how many sessions you may need, how much they would cost. The session usually lasts an hour.

What happens after the first meeting?
A joint meeting will be arranged by the mediator providing both of you are happy to proceed. These meetings usually take 90 minutes. The mediator will help you discuss and identify the solutions available to you both. The number of meetings depends on your individual needs.

When an agreement is reached, your mediator will provide you with a written summary so that everyone is clear about what has been decided. Your agreement can also be made legally binding by the court.
